China’s intangible cultural heritage velvet flower
Velvet flowers, a Chinese intangible cultural heritage, are a kind of ornaments made of silk, copper wire and other materials through traditional handicrafts. They have a long history and exquisite craftsmanship, and are known as “Oriental three-dimensional silk flowers”. Velvet flowers originated in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and developed and matured especially in Nanjing and Yangzhou. In the Tang Dynasty’s “Picture of Ladies with Flowers in Their Hairpins”, there are images of women wearing velvet flowers. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, velvet flowers became tribute to the court and were called “palace flowers”. Folk women also wear velvet flowers during weddings and festivals, which means auspiciousness (such as the homonym of “glory”).
