Chinese Daomadan: Heroines in Chinese Opera Who Are as Good as Men
Daomadan is a unique female role in traditional Chinese opera (especially Peking Opera), known for their heroic image of strong martial arts and heroic appearance. They must have the softness of a female role and the strength of a male role, and are a model of “both civil and military” on the opera stage. The formation of Daomadan is in the same vein as the “Wudan” in the Song and Yuan Dynasty Zaju, and gradually took shape with the development of Peking Opera during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are clear records of “Daomadan” in the Qing Dynasty court opera (such as “Shengping Office Archives”). “Daoma” refers to the character’s proficiency in swords, spears, riding and shooting, and “Dan” is a general term for female roles, collectively known as “Daomadan”.
